  10.        INSTALLING ACTIVE BOOKREADER
  11.        ----------------------------

  13.        Use the setup program to install Active BookReader.  The program
  14.        SETUP.EXE is a DOS program.  It can be run from any valid drive or
  15.        directory.  You need not change the default drive to the distribution
  16.        diskette.  You can even copy the contents of the distribution diskette
  17.        to a temporary directory and run the setup program from there.  The
  18.        setup program is run as follows:
  19.  
  20.        [drive:]setup <source> <destination>
  21.  
  22.        The square brackets enclose the optional drive designator.  The left
  23.        and right chevrons represent the required drive and/or directory
  24.        designation for the source (e.g., the files included on the
  25.        distribution diskette), and the destination (i.e., the drive and/or
  26.        directory designation where Active BookReader is to be installed).
  27.  
  28.        The following are examples of installing Active BookReader from the a:
  29.        and b: drive, respectively, assuming that the default drive is not a:
  30.        in the first case, and not b: in the second case.  The examples also
  31.        indicate the recommended installation directory.  Using the c: drive
  32.        is not necessary.  You may substitute any valid drive designation
  33.        which has sufficient storage space (excluding CD-ROM drives and write-
  34.        protected drives).

  36.             a:setup a: c:\abook
  37.             b:setup b: c:\abook
  38.  
  39.        NOTE: You cannot install Active BookReader to a 1.2 Mb or 1.44 Mb
  40.        diskette.  There is insufficient storage to contain all the expanded
  41.        files.  The setup program will require at least 2.4 Mb of available
  42.        storage on the destination drive.

  44.        While the setup program is running, it identifies the files as they
  45.        are installed.  If there are no error messages during processing,
  46.        Active BookReader is installed properly.
  47.  
  48.        If you are re-installing Active BookReader in the same directory after
  49.        using it for some time, the program will warn you about replacing
  50.        existing files.
  51.  
  52.        EXECUTING ACTIVE BOOKREADER
  53.        ---------------------------

  55.        If you are already running Microsoft Windows, then you can invoke
  56.        Active BookReader in one of two typical ways:
  57.  
  58.        + Use the file manager to display the files in the installation
  59.        directory, then double click on the file BOOK.EXE.
  60.  
  61.        + Using the Program Manager, select the Run item on the File menu. 
  62.        Enter the full path name of the program.  For example, if the
  63.  
  64.        installation directory is c:\abook, then you would enter
  65.        c:\abook\book.exe.
  66.  
  67.        If you are not already running Microsoft Windows, then you can invoke
  68.        Microsoft Windows and Active BookReader at the same time.  For
  69.        example, if the current default directory is the windows directory,
  70.        and the Active BookReader installation directory is as above, then at
  71.        the DOS command line enter: win c:\abook\book.exe.

  74.        information on creating program manager items, or refer to the
  75.        Microsoft Windows Users Guide.

  77.        FORMS
  78.        -----

  80.        Described below are several forms included on the distribution disk.  
  81.        They are designed for easy printing.  Just copy the file to the
  82.        printer.  For example:

  88.        REMOVING ACTIVE BOOKREADER
  89.        --------------------------
  90.  
  91.        Active BookReader was designed to make it easy to install and remove
  92.        from your system.  To remove it, simply delete the installation
  93.        directory and all its sub-directories.  The MS-Windows program manager
  94.        can delete a directory tree easily.  Refer to the MS-Windows manual if
  95.        you do not know how to do this.
  96.  
  97.        If you have not followed our suggestion of placing all active books as
  98.        sub-directories of the installation directory, then you must
  99.        individually delete all the directories which hold active books.
  100.  
  101.        CREATING A BOOK
  102.        ---------------
  103.  
  104.        After installing Active BookReader, you should immediately create an
  105.        active book from the file MANUAL.TXT located in the MANUAL
  106.        sub-directory created during installation.
  107.  
  108.        Use the Create Book item on the File menu to create the book.  A
  109.        standard file open dialog is presented.  Select first the MANUAL
  110.        sub-directory, then select the file MANUAL.TXT.  Then another dialog
  111.        is presented with book creation options.  You may use all the default
  112.        values in this dialog.  Select the OK button.
  113.  
  114.        While the book is being created, a progress indicator will be
  115.        displayed, indicating the percent complete.  The processing is done in
  116.        the background. You may perform other tasks while the active book is
  117.        being created, although creating it should not require more than a
  118.        minute.

  120.        After creating the manual, use the Open Book item on the File menu to
  121.        open the new book.  Then use the Display All item on the View menu. 
  122.        Depending on your screen resolution, then use one of the items on the
  123.        Window menu to cascade, tile or arrange the displayed views.

  125.        BETA TESTING
  126.        ------------

  128.        Active Software, Inc. is seeking a group of users to act as beta
  129.        testers.  If you are interested, print the file BETA.FRM, fill it out
  130.        and send it to us.  The address is indicated on the form.  All
  131.        selected beta testers will be notified.
  132.  
  133.        We reserve the right to limit the number of beta testers.  We seek all
  134.        types of users, from novices to experts, including casual users,
  135.        regular users, power users, and developers.  Preference will be given
  136.        to those who send a formatted disk (5.25 inch 1.2 Mb, or 3.25 inch
  137.        1.44 Mb) a stamped, self addressed disk mailer, and a completed copy
  138.        of BETA.FRM.  All disks will be returned, either with the beta test
  139.        version files, or the latest version of the demo files.

  141.        All beta testers who identify a problem or make a helpful suggestion
  142.        will receive a free copy of the final release of each version of the
  143.        software for which they are contributors.

  145.        ORDERING ACTIVE BOOKREADER
  146.        --------------------------

  148.        If you wish to order Active BookReader, print the file ORDER.FRM, fill
  149.        it in and send it to us at the address indicated.
  150.  
  151.        Active BookReader is offered at an introductory price of $49 per user
  152.        until March 31, 1994.  After that the price will be $99.
  153.  
  154.        REPORTING PROBLEMS
  155.        ------------------
  156.  
  157.        If you have a problem with Active BookReader, try to determine whether
  158.        it is repeatable or transient.  If it is repeatable, read the section
  159.        on troubleshooting in the manual to determine if there is a way to
  160.        avoid it.  If it is a problem, please print the file INCIDENT.FRM,
  161.        fill it out and send it to us.
  162.  
  163.        Regardless of the type of problem, determine whether it persists after
  164.        other applications are closed.  It may be necessary to restart Active
  165.        BookReader after closing other applications.  This procedure may point
  166.        to a memory problem in Active BookReader or one of the other
  167.        applications which are either loaded or executing.

  169.        The first user to report a given problem will receive a free update to
  170.        the next version.  This assumes that we have not already detected the
  171.        problem.  The award of free updates shall be at the sole discretion of
  172.        Active Software, Inc.
